Water Usage According to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics for the year 2000-2001 Australian households and businesses consumed the equivalent of almost 50 times the volume of Sydney Harbour (24,909 gigalitres GL) of water in 2000-01. Water Wastage Australia is currently the second highest user of domestic water in the world. "Urban areas take a similar volume of water per hectare from supply catchments as irrigation, but discharge a much greater volume as storm water and sewage." Summary According to the bulk of information available, approximately 10% of the water in Australia is used for households, with 44% of that 10% used outside for pools and gardens, washing the car and the like. Of the balance as much as 35% of the 10% can be consumed by bath and showers, washing machines, toilets, leaks and the like, leaving 21% of 10% of Australia's water (that's 2.1%) for human consumption, and that's being generous.
